Sustainable actions for a better tomorrow
Responsibility and sustainable development
We act responsibly so that every step leads towards a greener future 🌳
Good governance
Tanhuvaara Sports Institute is a non-profit foundation whose activities include supporting and developing physical activity, well-being and health.
Our operations are transparent and open, our finances are responsible and it guarantees the continuity of operations. We conduct competitive procurement and strive to choose the most economically advantageous option whenever possible.
We annually collect information on the affiliations and side jobs of elected officials and managers. With the help of the register, we can prevent situations where trust in decision-making could be jeopardized.
Our travel guidelines recommend using public transport and we strive to utilize remote connections where possible.
We treat our customers, stakeholders and staff fairly and equally, and we do not tolerate harassment. It is important to us that our staff is equal and fair.
The Occupational Safety and Health Committee and the Occupational Safety and Health Ombudsman will participate in developing occupational well-being together with the employer. An anonymous reporting channel will be created for personnel, where they can report suspected abuses observed in Tanhuvaara.
When recruiting personnel, we mainly prefer open applications and take into account the requirements of the Equality Act. For trusted persons, we follow the foundation's rules.

Tanhuvaara Sports Institute's fair competition program
Tanhuvaara Sports Institute and Training Center has compiled a Fair Competition program coordinated by SUEK as part of the sports institutes' responsibility program. The program includes measures related to anti-doping activities and the prevention of competition manipulation, to which Tanhuvaara Sports Institute is committed. Tanhuvaara Sports Institute is committed to complying with the Finnish Anti-Doping Code in force at any given time. We promote and inform all customer groups about the issue of Fair Competition in our activities.
The Fair Competition theme is prominently displayed in many different forms at Tanhuvaara Sports Institute. Tanhuvaara buildings feature information displays on the Fair Competition theme, as well as stands and doping-free stickers reminding people of the Fair Competition program. In addition, Tanhuvaara trains its staff, students and athlete-customer groups on the content of the Fair Competition program themes.
Tanhuvaara Sports Institute will provide accommodation information about athletes who are subject to the anti-doping regulations and stay overnight at the institute to doping testers when requested.

Sustainable development
A sustainable development plan has been prepared for Tanhuvaara Sports Institute, with the help of which Tanhuvaara aims to commit to the goals of Agenda 2030 with its own operating models.
With the help of a sustainable development plan, the sports institute aims to reduce its carbon footprint and operate more responsibly, taking care of its ecological operating environment.
The 2030 Agenda is a global sustainable development agenda to which Finland is committed.
Sustainability communication is a cornerstone in the success of the selected measures.
Tanhuvaara strives to communicate its operations externally and at the same time inform its staff about environmental awareness. Tanhuvaara instructs its staff to promote Tanhuvaara's sustainable development measures through their own actions and implement these in the customer interface.
Agenda 2030 action plan items to which Tanhuvaara is committed:
Health and well-being
The goal of the sustainable development action plan is to ensure a healthy life and well-being for all ages. Tanhuvaara wants to promote well-being and bring it into the everyday lives of its customers. A good example of this is the senior project, which provides its customers with comprehensive well-being with themes such as active everyday life, coping, nutritional awareness and the importance of everyday exercise. Tanhuvaara is a smoke-free and drug-free educational institution.
Good education and reducing inequality
Tanhuvaara Sports Institute provides high-quality, equal and open education for everyone. High-quality sports education provides the opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles at every age. Course and teaching activities enable all customers to work together, regardless of age, gender or financial status.
Sustainable cities and communities, as well as cooperation and partnerships
Tanhuvaara Sports Institute is located near the city, next to a lake and a forest. Nature is a strong part of Tanhuvaara's operating environment and values. Tanhuvaara strives to reduce the burden on nature and waste through its own operations and sustainable development measures. Tanhuvaara Sports Institute strives to choose partners who take sustainable development and responsibility into account in their own operations.
Responsible consumption and climate
Tanhuvaara Sports School strives to ensure responsible consumption through its own measures, such as reducing food waste, choosing environmentally friendly forms of energy and recycling. There is a solar power plant and a charging point for electric cars in the Tanhuvaara area. Recycling takes place throughout the Tanhuvaara area and all waste is sorted. Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint through various measures. In our choices, we emphasize sustainable development and also include this in our educational activities.
Over the years, many measures have been taken in Tanhuvaara to promote sustainable development, such as:
- Changing outdoor and indoor lighting to LED lights–> the process is still ongoing
- Construction of a solar power plant
- Electric car charging point
- Waste sorting
- We have switched to using ecological detergents for cleaning.
- Development of restaurant services:
- using domestic raw materials and local food whenever possible
- vegetarian food at every meal
- minimizing and continuously measuring waste, utilizing leftover food
- Preference for washable dishes and biodegradability of takeaway cups and dishes
- We prefer ecological alternatives for packaging materials
- Increasing digitalization and preferential use of electronic material instead of paper
- Abandoning disposable towels in SPAs
- Movement and travel
- The cars in the house are hybrids.
- Staff commuting instructions to favour public transport and carpooling
- possibility of remote work depending on the job description
Tanhuvaara will continue to make investments in supporting sustainable development and responsibility in the future. Planned measures:
- Changing outdoor and indoor lighting to LED lighting over a period of 2-3 years
- A second electric car charging point to meet the increasing demand for electric cars
- Reducing food waste
- Wider waste sorting–> plastic collection and signage for customers about sorting
Future measures are constantly being mapped out and new investments are being considered from the perspective of the circular economy, sustainable development and responsibility.
