Tanhuvaara and ISLO's cooperation strengthens physical education education in Eastern Finland

Tanhuvaara Sports Institute and the Eastern Finland Sports Institute (ISLO) have signed a cooperation agreement to develop sports expertise and educational paths throughout the Eastern Finland region and improve the accessibility of educational opportunities.

CEO and principal of Tanhuvaara Sports Institute Mika Tuononen According to the Finnish Olympic Committee, the cooperation was accelerated by a framework agreement between the Finnish Sports Colleges and the Finnish Association of Sports Colleges, which develops coaching and management expertise nationwide.

The agreement combines the educational expertise of sports institutes with the operating environments of physical education and sports. In the future, sports institutes will coordinate coaching and management training in their region together with sports federations and other actors.

  • ISLO's strong experience in training coaches and Tanhuvaara's basic qualification in physical education complement each other. The first concrete step is the multi-modal implementation of the professional qualification in physical education and coaching and the basic qualification in physical education guidance in Kuopio in autumn 2025, says ISLO's Rector and CEO Petri Pennanen.
  • This will expand the regional offering of secondary school physical education courses. We have, as it were, three city campuses where training is provided – Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna, says Tuononen.

Multimodal delivery brings flexibility to studying

Hybrid studies combine online education, work-life learning, and short-term courses that are organized in different locations. Joint short-term courses enable the utilization of extensive learning environments and networking among professionals already during the studies.

The collaboration will bring more flexible educational paths and increase the vitality of physical education and sports activities in the region. In the future, smaller competence packages will also be offered as continuing education.
