SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR AND SWIMMING SUPERVISOR

Is water your element? And do you want to promote important civic skills and water safety by training as a swimming instructor and swimming supervisor? During the training, you will acquire the skills to teach water competence, from swimming skills to water safety skills and attitudes. In addition, you will acquire basic knowledge and skills in lifesaving, customer service and the duties of a lifeguard in a swimming pool.

The training includes Finnish Swimming Instruction and Lifesaving Association (SUH) authorized swimming instructor ja swimming instructor a certificate if you pass the tasks, exams and physical tests required in the training.

When you obtain a swimming instructor qualification, you can continue your training in water sports, for example at SUH. special swimming instructor or baby and family swimming instructor with training.

Teaching swimming is an optional part of the basic qualification in physical education guidance, Working in a swimming pool environment 15 competence points. In the training, you will become familiar with the areas and concepts of working in a swimming pool environment, as well as safety aspects.

The studies are carried out according to a personal study plan in contact teaching periods in Tanhuvaara, online studies and practical work assignments with an apprenticeship or training contract.

It is a good idea to apply for an apprenticeship or training contract before the training begins. A suitable location is a swimming pool where you can teach swimming and act as a swimming supervisor.

The training is suitable for those over 18 years of age, who have good swimming skills and are interested in swimming instruction and lifesaving. The training is suitable as a supplementary training for those working in the sports sector, working in swimming instruction and swimming supervision in various organizations. Previous experience in the sports sector is beneficial in the training.

If you are aiming for training in the field of physical education, this training is part of the basic degree in physical education guidance.

The education system applies regulations on degree-specific health requirements and conditions for admission to study. 

Suitability and motivation

The applicant's suitability and motivation for the field will be assessed based on the application and interview. The interview will be held at a separately agreed time after the application has been received. All applicants will be interviewed.

 

Health and functional capacity requirements

The Basic Degree in Physical Education Guidance and the Professional Degree in Physical Education and Coaching are degrees covered by the SORA (Solutions for Unsuitability for Study) regulations. 

In SORA degrees, the education provider may request information about the student's health and functional capacity when applying for studies or if these change during the studies.

A circumstance related to the health or functional capacity of an applicant may not be an obstacle to admission. However, a student may not be admitted if his/her health or functional capacity does not allow him/her to perform practical tasks related to education in an educational institution, workplace or other learning environment, if the safety requirements related to the qualifications referred to in Section 531 of the Vocational Education and Training Act (2017/81) so require and if the obstacle cannot be removed by reasonable measures. With regard to the person's health or functional capacity, the limitations caused by possible illnesses and the individual treatment situation for the illnesses must be assessed. Obstacles to admission may include:  

  • an illness or injury that limits physical health and ability to function
  • an illness or disability that prevents communication and sign language
  • drug addiction or problem or abuse
  • a mental health disorder or psychological illness that is not under treatment
  • substance dependence or problem or abuse
  • a functional impairment that makes interaction difficult

 

The student is obliged to inform the educational institution of any of the above-mentioned circumstances that may affect their studies or work in the field of physical education. In SORA degrees, a student's right to study may be revoked if they repeatedly or seriously endanger the health and safety of another person or do not meet the requirements for admission to SORA degrees in terms of their health or functional capacity.

Your own computer and sufficient study skills for online and independent study

The training provider will request a criminal record extract from those selected for the training if the training essentially involves working with minors.

 

In addition, when entering the studies, it is good to be able to perform the following:

  • swim about 500 m in 12 minutes
  • dive to a depth of 4 m at least once or to a depth of 2 m a couple of times in a row
  • dive about 12–15 m without much problem

During the training, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in planning and directing group exercise in various forms of group exercise. Personal Trainer training package

Do you want to help people feel better on a personal level and cope with their everyday lives?

The training is ideal as a supplementary training for those working in physical education guidance positions in various organizations and who want to learn more about individual guidance and help people on the path to lifestyle change.

If you have an educational background in the sports field, you can apply to study Personal Trainer studies as a continuing education. 

If you don't have a physical education background, you can easily get one. With a professional degree in physical education and coaching in sports skills studies, which include Personal Trainer studies as part of the degree.

The training includes The Finnish Sports Institutes Association an authorized Personal Trainer certificate if you have participated in all the in-person training sessions and passed the required tasks and exam in the training.

In order to obtain a PT certificate from a sports institute, you must have completed professional training in the field of sports before entering PT studies.
